Soc105 - Specific Purpose- The purpose of this speech is to inform my audience of the problems of post-divorce parenting.
Central Idea- There are many mistakes that divorces parents can make while raising their child/ren. There are also some helpful tips for successful parenting through a divorce.

Introduction
I. As of 2009, the divorce rate in the United States is around 50 percent. (CDC, 2009)
II. The divorce rate of couples with children was around 40 percent. (Discover Channel, n.d.)
A. With this being said, there are many parents who are struggling to co-parent.
1. Co-parenting is when parents effectively work together to raise their child/ren.
B. There are several tips that divorced parents can follow to obtain a healthy parenting relationship.

I. Parents may try to sabotage the child’s relationship with the other parent. (DrPhil.com, 2009)
A. They may be jealous of the child’s relationship with the other parent.
B. There may be animosity towards the other parent that may cause one to do this.
II. Parents may make their child/ren choose sides when there is a disagreement. (DrPhil.com, 2009)
A. Parents may argue about many different things.
B. It is not uncommon for parents to have completely different views on many subjects.
1. Parents may disagree on schedules.
2. There could be disagreements about the new relationship that each parent may enter.
3. Parents may disagree on the degree of discipline that should be enforced.
III. Some parents put too much responsibility or pressure on the child/ren. (DrPhil.com, 2009)
A. A parent may give the child/ren too much of an adult role.
1. This may be done subconsciously to replace the parent that is no longer in the picture.
2. This can cause undue stress upon the child/ren. Comm 110
